HEART ATTACK VS STROKE: WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

Heart attacks and strokes are serious health problems that require immediate medical attention. These situations can occur suddenly and knowing the difference between the two is very important.

Simply put, both conditions are a direct result of insufficient blood flow to critical parts of the body. Blockage of blood flow to the brain causes a stroke, while blockage of blood to the heart causes a heart attack. The modality of treatment for the two conditions differs and receiving immediate assistance determines the difference between survival, recovery, or serious harm (even death) for a patient.

What is a stroke?

Stroke is a serious disease that occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted. It is caused by blockage or laceration of blood vessels in the brain, and in both scenarios, brain tissue begins to die as it is denied the oxygen it needs so badly for its function.

Symptoms of a stroke:

  • Unexpected dizziness or loss of balance
  • Weakness or numbness on one side of the body
  • Intense headaches
  • Unusual blurring in one or both eyes
  • Difficulty speaking or understanding communication.

Remembering all the symptoms of a stroke can be confusing or difficult. That's why always remember the term FAST.

  • F – Sagging face
  • A – Arm weakness
  • S – Speech difficulties
  • T – Emergency Services Call Delay

Recognizing these three key symptoms along with prompt medical help will determine the damage and the key to recovery after a stroke. Taking careful note of when symptoms appear can help medical personnel administer the appropriate treatment.

What is a heart attack?

A heart attack is a damage to the heart due to an interruption in blood flow. The disturbance is caused by the buildup of plaque in the arteries. This buildup makes it harder for blood to flow to the heart over time, leading to heart muscle damage or failure. This condition is called coronary artery disease, which is one of the main causes of heart attacks. Since brain cells do not receive oxygen during a stroke, even heart muscle begins to die when it does not receive oxygen. At this point, it is very important to get blood and oxygen back to the heart to prevent further damage to the heart.

Symptoms of a heart attack:

Symptoms of a heart attack can usually build up over time (hours or even days) or come on suddenly. Common symptoms are:

  • Chest pain or tightness
  • Unexplained pain in the arm or shoulders
  • Unexplained pain in the back, neck, or jaw
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Weakness, dizziness, and fainting

These symptoms are usually accompanied by vomiting, nausea, and unusual tiredness. If you suspect or see someone having a heart attack, call emergency services. Perform CPR or use a defibrillator if available.

Prevention is key

An immediate medical response is key here, and preventing it in the first place is even better. Strokes and heart attacks can be prevented by preventing risk factors such as smoking, obesity, physical inactivity, and stress. Genetics, age, and other factors play a secondary role. Adopting a healthy lifestyle by eating healthy, exercising, and not smoking are the best ways to reduce your risk of having a stroke or heart attack.
